Garbhadhana Samskara

Conceiving virtuous children

The sexual impulse is one of the most primary biological urges. In Lord Krsna’s Vedic civilization we learn how to live in this world with the objective of leaving it. How then to fulfill this basic urge without being implicated in karma and continuing in samsara – the repeated cycle of birth and death? We do that by performing the Vivaha Samskara or marriage sacrament, and the home of the householder becomes his ashram – place of spiritual cultivation. The state of being married is thus called the Grhasta ashram.

For such spiritually minded grhastas marriage is a partnership to aid them in their mutual progress in spiritual life, and not simply a license for sexual gratification. One of the duties of such a married couple is to produce virtuous and spiritually enlightened children. Bringing such spiritually aware children into the world is beneficial both for the parents spiritually, as well as for society in general. The conception of such great children is a science and not the mere byproduct of random recreational copulation on the part of the parents. It has been said that in modern times people are more concerned about the pedigrees their dogs and horses, than how they bring their own children into the world. The science of creating spiritual progeny of pure consciousness is called the Garbhadhana Samskara. There are several factors involved in this process including the spiritual consciousness of the parents, the health of the prospective parents, and astrological considerations.

The astrological considerations are twofold. First we examine the charts of the prospective parents and determine their karma in regards to children, that is, if the prevailing times are favorable for having offspring. Secondly, we help in choosing an auspicious time for planting the seed, which carries the soul, into the womb of the mother. This process requires detailed knowledge of the prospective mother's monthly cycle, that is, when her menses begin and end. The astrologer then determines if that particular cycle has the possibility of conception, if so he then chooses the date and time for performing the Garbhadhana Samskara, the purificatory sacrament of planting the seed according to religious principles. Unlike ordinary sexual activity which further binds the soul's of all involved into material consciousness, the Garbhadhana Samskara is a purely spiritual act as is confirmed by Lord Krsna in the Bhagavad-gita 7.11. Such sex aimed at creating godly children is as good as God Himself.

"I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bharatas [Arjuna]."

If we are fortunate then on the first attempt of planting the seed there will be conception. If not we keep trying until there is conception.

It must be recognized that choosing an auspicious time to conceive is only useful if the parents are fertile and capable of conceiving, it is not a cure for infertility. No matter how auspicious the time no child will be conceived to a barren couple. To overcome such difficulties remedial measures may offer a solution.

The following link to the Sarirastana of the Caraka Samhita provides a wealth of Ayurvedic information regarding conception and pregnancy.

It should be recognized that normally for choosing the Muhurta of an event we charge more, we are thus charging less in order to aid those sincere married couples who are interested in bringing a godly soul into this world for the betterment of society.
