Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh of Jaipur (1686-1743) was an astronomer king who founded the city of Jaipur as well as several astronomical observatories in different North Indian cities. In spite of being involved in ongoing political struggles with the Moghuls he found the time to dedicate himself to astronomy and developed highly accurate astronomical instruments and ephemerides.
